70th Regional Readiness Command's 100th Anniversary of the Army Reserve Event - Seattle, Washington

The 70th Regional Readiness Command organized a special Army Reserve 100th Anniversary event at the Army Corps of Engineers' Hiram Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle on August 9, 2008. The event featured a joint concert by the 70th Army and 104th Division Bands, which played selections of music from across the 100 years of the Army Reserve's existence, interspersed with historical information. There was an array of equipment on display for visitors, as well as a ceremony in which five soldiers reenlisted, one was promoted, awards were presented to employers and supporters of the Army Reserve, and the Commanding General of the 70th RRC cut a birthday cake. Also in attendance were Don Mills, past Commander for the American Legion; Major General Chris Ingram, Commander, 70th Regional Readiness Command' and Jim Shephard, incoming State Chair of the Washington State Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (and retired Colonel from the 70th RRC's preceding organization, the 124th U.S. Army Reserve Command).

Seven Seals Award winner Lois Gustafson's career as a coordinator of volunteers began as an effort to support a few soon-to-be-deployed soldiers she knew from an organization they belonged to. It soon grew beyond her single ability to support, but friends and even total strangers have heard of her efforts, and now, Gustafson's brigades of volunteers regularly support deployed Army Reserve Soldiers, active duty Army Soldiers, National Guard Soldiers, Marines, Seabees and Coast Guard Reservists. Gustafson's volunteers send packages to deployed soldiers and answer "grant their wishes" for "touches of home" which can be hard to find in Afghanistan, Iraq or Kuwait. It started with asking Microsoft to donate X-boxes and games for Soldiers and has expanded to sending makings for taco dinners, and artificial Christmas trees during the holidays. Images were provided by Master Sergeant Dan Coon and Pam Garrison both of the 70th Regional Readiness Command.
